Home Teeth Whitening

When it comes to teeth whitening you have two options in-office (dental) teeth whitening and home teeth whitening. In office teeth whitening is effective but it is very time and money consuming. Four visits to the dentist for teeth whitening will cost on average of $1,000. Home teeth whitening systems are much cheaper and can be done at your convenience, not the dentists. The results are practically identical also. There are four types of home teeth whitening systems out there. Brush on whitening, trays with bleaching gels, whitening strips and home remedy types.

The main ingredient in most teeth whiteners is peroxide. Brush on whitening lets you target the teeth on an individual basis, which is great if for example your front two teeth are more yellow than others because of smoking.

Teeth whitening trays are used with bleaching gels to whiten teeth. They are simple enough to use, you put the gel in the tray and place your teeth in the trays. This helps to spread the gel evenly over your teeth. Never use them for longer than the indicated length of time though to avoid any irritation. The only problem with bleaching trays is that the ones you buy in the drugstore are made for “generic” mouths. This means they are based on the average size and shape mouth. Some people find they do not fit well in their mouths. If this is the case and you prefer this type of whitening system you dentist can make trays that will be more durable that the drugstore ones that are molded to your mouth.

Whitening strips are very thin very flexible pieces of plastic that have one side coated with a film of hydrogen peroxide. The strip is the delivery system for the whitener and the strips are placed across the teeth and pressed into place. Try to achieve the best possible contact with the teeth as you can. The kits combine two shapes of strips one for top teeth one for bottom. They should be worn for no more than 30 minutes twice a day to avoid irritation to your mouth and gums.

Some home remedies, or holistic type whitening tips include rinsing you mouth for 30 seconds after eating, chewing sugar-free gum after eating when you do not have the time to brush and choosing crunchy vegetables and fruits for snacks. Apple slices, celery sticks and the like actually help clean your teeth while you chew.
So invest a little money in your smile and follow the hints here and you will have a wonderful white gleaming smile in no time.
