Teeth Whitening Kit

There are many methods of whitening your teeth that can be used, but the most convenient and inexpensive method is over the counter teeth whitening kits. These kits include a peroxide bleaching gel that is inserted in a tray that resembles a mouth guard. This is then worn for a specified period of time, usually 1-2 hours. These kits can cost between $20 and $100.

Another teeth whitening kit that can be used is a take home kit that is given to you by a dentist. This method works the same way as the over the counter kit. One way that this kit is different is that a custom made tray is used. Also this kit uses a stronger concentration of peroxide gel. This method can cost between $100 and $400.

Some of the typical side effects of using a teeth whitening kit are teeth and gum sensitivity. Usually the gum sensitivity comes from having a whitening tray that is not fitting correctly. That is one advantage of getting a professionally dispensed kit. Since the dentist customizes the tray this can prevent gum irritation. With most over the counter kits the tray is one size fits all, which makes it easier to get gum irritation. Although, there are some kits that allow you to mold the tray slightly closer to the shape of your teeth. Teeth sensitivity usually happens early on in the whitening process. One thing you can do to help alleviate this problem is to wear the tray for a shorter period of time. Other options you can use are to stop using the whitening treatment for a few days, or you can brush your teeth with toothpaste for sensitive teeth.

Teeth whitening kits are not recommended for use by everybody. Women that are pregnant or lactating should not whiten their teeth. People who have gum disease or cavities should not whiten their teeth either. If cavities are filled before a whitening treatment that is fine. If cavities are not filled whitening gel can get into the cavity, and cause internal damage, which could lead to a root canal. Also people allergic to peroxide should not whiten their teeth. Smokers that use these kits are going to have limited results, because smoking causes internal discoloration of the teeth.

The results of the whitening kits can last up to a year if the right precautions are taken not to expose your teeth to foods and beverages that might stain your teeth. But if precautions are not taken the whiteness of your teeth might start to fade after a month. Both whitening kits are very effective. Choosing which one is right for you should be discussed with a dentist.
